On more than one occasion, Eliel Saarinen equates the cultural significance of all of mankind with the rise and fall of Western Civilization .... [H]ow can a well established, well learned, well articulated, and brilliant designer slip into this mistake? I am not particularly a most reliable resource on historical facts, but I can, with much confidence, argue the importance of the numerous civilizations that have sprung in all the corners of the world, those that have long fell, and the ones that still exist and are nurtured today.
